- Vijayakanth was born in Madurai in 1952. His name was Narayanan Vijayraj Alagaraswamy. During his acting career, he dropped ‘Raj’ from his name and added Kant. As far as prefixing the name with ‘Captain’ is concerned, it comes from his character in the 1991 film Captain Prabhakaran. In which he played the role of a forest officer. In 1990, he married Premlata, who supported him in his political journey.
- In 2005, Vijayakanth founded a party named Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) in the political scene of Tamil Nadu dominated by DMK and AIADMK. Only Vijayakanth emerged victorious in the party’s first electoral test in the 2006 assembly elections. Despite the solitary victory, DMDK managed to create a stir in the state politics.
- The 2011 state elections proved to be DMDK’s best election. That year, Vijayakanth had formed an alliance with AIADMK and announced to contest elections on 41 seats. The party won 29 out of 41 seats. This number was more than DMK’s seats at that time. Vijayakanth became the leader of the opposition and remained in this post till 2016.
- The next election was disappointing for Vijayakanth and DMDK. In the 2016 elections, many senior leaders not only lost the elections, they could not even save their deposits. DMDK also proved unsuccessful in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. He contested the elections in alliance with BJP and AIADMK. Vijaykant was ill for the last few years and kept a low profile. His wife Premlata was handling the party’s work.
